Essex County Megan's Law Unit

The Essex County Prosecutor's Megan's Law Unit was established in January 1995. It evaluates the risk that each sex offender poses to the community. The unit reviews the offender's predicate offense, offense history, personal characteristics, and community support. Staff may also look at prison records, school records, and psychological evaluations. They compile a report with a risk level that gets submitted to the court.

Essex County has the highest number of registered sex offenders in New Jersey. This means the Megan's Law Unit handles a large volume of cases. The unit provides countywide training for police officers, dispatchers, and rape care advocates. In July 2009, the office launched the Megan's Law Fugitive Initiative to track down sex offenders who failed to comply with their registration duties.

All Tier 3 offenders and certain Tier 2 offenders in Essex County are eligible for listing on the internet registry. The unit works with the New Jersey State Police to update the online database with current addresses and photos for each sex offender.
